POLICIES FOR EVENTS

  • Be aware of the café’s Safer Space Policy.  This means that NO racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise offensive behavior will be tolerated.  If you violate the policy, you will be asked to leave.  Period.

For both your and our sakes we need events to be successful. We want you or your organization to gain exposure and necessary funds. We need the same thing. So we request that you book events AT LEAST 2 WEEKS in advance. We need links to your soundcloud/website/facebook/

etc. If you are a touring band, we apprecciate your work to find a local support bands to perform with you. For promo,  send us a digital file of a poster and handbill with the following information, or drop off + mail your own stack to us.
name of your band or organization
name of event / tour
date and time
a graphic!
Donation amount, $5

our name (“Red & Black Cafe”)
our address (400 SE 12th Ave. PDX)
our phone number (503-231-3899)
& website: (redandblackcafe.com)
whatever else makes sense to put on there

When we get the posters and handbills we’ll post them at the cafe and get them distributed around town in advance of your show or event. Of course if you’ve got fans or supporters who can help us do that it will tend to make your event even more successful.

In addition to paper flyers there is also (duh) the internet. We use facebook to get the word out. If you do please create a facebook event with the same info as the flyers. In addition please provide links to your music/website/videos/etc. So that folks who aren’t familiar with what you do can get some idea. After you create the facebook event please also, at a minimum, add our two booking coordinators as ‘event admins.’ If any of this is confusing please just email our booking email to ask! (email: booking@redandblackcafe.com) Blow it up!

Performers, speakers, etc do not get paid aside from what is taken at the door or through ticket sales. We request a 30% (gross) cut of these payable the night of the show or event. We encourage you to make a lot of money for your band or worthy organization. To be real we also need to make money from your event to make hosting them sustainable. For example the bigger the event the more our regular later night diners will eat and drink elsewhere. Having one person posted at the front to greet folks and collect funds is a must. This can be a member from a band that isn’t playing, one of your supporters, your dad…we just don’t care. Please make sure that they’re there from at least 15min before the first band / event start to ½ the way through the show or event at least. It’s also not a bad idea to pass the hat toward the end of your event!

TICKETS:
If your event is awesome enough, if your band rulez hard, if a topic is timely or urgent enough it is possible to sell tickets. Selling tickets in advance can be difference between being able to pay for someone’s travel to perform or speak or make it so that your organization has needed funding. We can totally do it! We can sell them at the counter and over the phone (with credit/debit).

BANDS
If you do this stuff you will be rewarded! Each performer, promoter / organizer (1 per show/event) and door person (1 per show / event) gets 2 ‘drink’ tickets. Each drink ticket is worth $3 or a pint of beer, cider or kombucha (normally $4 y’all.) You can combine your 2 tickets and get 3 Hamm’s tallboys, just saying. After that you get happy hour prices & deals all night ($3 pints/ $3.75 20oz anti-imperial pints / $9 pitchers.) AND you get 25% off whatever else you order that night.

For political/anti-political events of all sorts please consider getting ‘sponsored’ by our local community radio station KBOO. Sponsorship in this case means getting your event plugged by KBOO multiple times a this case means getting your event plugged by KBOO multiple times a day. Check out the sponsorship page to see if it might work for your event: http://kboo.fm/sponsorship.

We also love radical book tours, debates, panel discussions, video over internet talks, film showings, zine & comic readings, trivia nights, game nights, internet celebrity meet & greets…or whatever else you can think of…srsly. We once did a shared literary event with a bar in boston using our digital projector, an audience facing camera and the internet. We’ve hosted radical theater, radio listening events, a 24 hour zine challenge, bondage demos – your imagination (and all the shit in this document : ( are the limit!

  • Be aware of the café’s Safer Space Policy.  This means that NO racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise offensive behavior will be tolerated.  If you violate the policy, you will be asked to leave.  Period.

Be respectful of our workers and our space – please bus your own table(s), tip your servers, and encourage your friends / family / band / etc to do the same.

  • Be respectful of your fellow patrons.
  • Be respectful of our equipment and belongings.  Check with a worker before moving tables, chairs, etc.  It is also generally preferred for anyone hosting an event to check-in with a worker before setting up.  Just a simple introduction to break the ice!
  • In consideration of our upstairs and next door neighbours, we ask that events start on time, and end on time.  Bands must show up an hour before the show to check in, load equipment, etc.  Events MUST be done by 10pm unless other arrangements are made.
  • In addition to offering a community space, we work hard to make delicious food and beverages.  Tipping is customary and appreciated!
  • We have a DVD player, projector, and speakers for film screenings.  We also have a  P.A. system with a 3 microphones that event organizers are welcome to use.  If you need anything else, you are responsible for bringing them.  Please let us know your audio / visual needs in your request to ensure that we are adequately equipped for your event.
  • Please check with the workers to see if your levels are acceptable.  If they are too high, you will be asked to turn down.
  • We reserve the right to cancel any event on the spot if it violates our Safer Space Policy.  This is for the safety of our space and our community.
  • Sorry, but NO COVERSWE’RE SO SERIOUS ABOUT THIS.  Unless you have thousands of dollars to cover the huge ASCAP fine or can give us all jobs if we get shut down, please don’t play covers.
  • Finally, please respect these policies and come hungry (and often)!

Touring acts: The success of your show will depend greatly on your ability to network with local bands and set up your own bill, do  promotion and make flyers and posters to send us. Please put the work in, and we will do our part! We are far more likely to book bands with local bands already in place. <3
